PROJECT SUMMARY
Hot Rock™ is a system that allows solar thermal energy collected during the day to be stored for the later conversion to electricity at a 1-to-5 kW scale. The system comprises a parabolic trough, a rock bed and a heat engine. Solar thermal energy is collected using the trough and stored in the rock bed.
This innovation provides for energy needs with less theft risk, lower cost and higher local content over traditional chemical battery storage systems.
The availability of a financially viable embedded generation solution would offer a way for members of the public to reduce their monthly electricity bill or even create a source of income via electricity wheeling agreements recently made available in SA.
